Potatoes

Everyone loves potatoes!
And University Munch! loves them too because they are cheap and easy to cook!
But sometimes we never know what to do with them...
'Boil em, mash em, stick em in a stew?' (for the Lord Of The Rings fans out there)

So University Munch! thought we could give you a few ideas... 8 ideas to be precise!
awww aren't we nice?.

Anyways lets get down to business!

Idea 1 - Baked - If you have some baking potatoes how about sticking them in the oven? make sure u prick them a few times with a fork first! You can rub them in olive oil and a little salt for that extra flavour if you like. About 200C/400F/Gas 6 for 1-1½ hrs until the skin turns golden brown should do it!
Serve split open with lots of butter and whatever fillings you love.

Idea 2 - Boiled - How boring! Indeed it is! But add a sprinkle of salt and pepper on new potatoes with a few nobs of butter and a sprinkle or parsley on the side of a lovely roast joint and BAM! not boring at all. Follow the packet instructions for cooking times.

Idea 3 - Sauteed - Sounds hard but its not. Dice the potatoes into 1cm cubes and par boil them (half cook them in boiling water) once boiled and drained, heat a pan with a drop of oil and a nob of butter. Add the potatoes and fry turning occasionally. After a few minutes add some salt and a sprinkle of herbs like thyme, rosemary or mixed herbs and maybe even a crushed garlic. Once the potatoes have turned golden brown, remove from the pan and serve.

Idea 4 - Mashed - Boil peeled potatoes in salted water, drain once cooked according to packet instructions and allow the water and steam to evaporate (approximately 3 minutes). Add the potatoes to a large bowl with a few nobs of butter, a sprinkle of black pepper and a dash of milk. Mash the ingredients with a fork or a potato masher to your desired texture.

Idea 5 - Dauphinoise - Sounds posh and hard but really isn't! Slice 500g of potatoes very thin, then combine with 250 ml double cream, 2 garlic cloves and a sprinkle of salt and pepper. Stick it in an oven proof dish then whack it in the oven for about 50-60 mins at 160C/320F/Gas 2.

Idea 6 - Fries - This may be hard and cheaper to buy from the frozen section in the supermarket but we like to be adventurous at University Munch! even though we also like our meals cheap (being poor students) but oh well! First you need to peel potatoes and slice them into a pan of water. Heat the pan and simmer for 5 minutes then remove and drain and allow to dry. Once the potatoes are dry you need to fry them in a deep pan at a medium heat for about 5 minutes before they take on any colour, then remove them and allow them to dry again. You must then deep fry the potatoes until they turn golden brown (about 7-8 minutes). 'What! fry them again?' you ask. Yes! This is so that you have the most perfect crispiest fries! :)
Hopefully the long-winded process will be worth it. Thankfully some clever clever person created freezer fries! Yay!

Idea 7 - Roasted - Our favourite way! Peel potatoes, par boil them in salted water and then drain. Once boiled add to a hot roasting tin with a few teaspoons of olive oil and a few nobs of butter or fat. sprinkle salt and pepper then whack into the oven for 25-40 minutes until golden brown at 200C/400F/Gas 6.

Idea 8 - Stew - Pretty simple! chop them up into quarters and stick them in a casserole dish with your desired meat and vegetables. Pour over stock to cover half of contents and put it in the oven till the meat and potatoes are cooked through. See, simples!

... there's so much more! you can even rosti them or make hash browns or samosas the possibilities seem endless! AHHHHHH Potatoes!!!
